The Open e-Class platform is a comprehensive ‘Course Management System’, used to store and provide educational content and materials. Offered by the Greek Academic Network (GUnet), it supports and offers on-line learning services. Its goal is the incorporation and utilization of the Internet technologies in the adult teaching and learning processes. ‘Open e-Class’ provides teachers with the opportunity to develop and organize on-line courses and educational material such as texts, documents, video, audio (lectures), slides-presentations, pictures etc. Students can then access the uploaded content via a student-channel which the platform features. ‘Open e-Class’ was designed as an open-source platform, with multilingual support, adaptability to current or future demands, and easy to use environment, being among its main principles. The service is accessible via any web browser.

• It is utilized, for free, by educational institutions, and its source code is freely available and customizable, should the need arise.

• Develop and manage unlimited online courses, as well as organize, store, and distribute educational resources

• View statistics and information, regarding learners’ participation and progress, and use of platform
• Manage platform users and form student groups
• Communicate with users via a variety of tools such as chat, comments, teleconference etc.
• Protection of the course’s content, in case of deletion or corruption.

Its goal is the creative utilization of the internet and its services, in the adult educational process, thus offering solutions to issues that might come up during conventional teaching methods.

The Open e-Class platform allows teachers to organize practical online courses quickly and effectively, by using existing educational materials such as documents, presentations, exercises, pictures, and videos. Students can then access the provided material.

Platform users are able to:

• Create and adjust online courses and educational resources, according to the current needs.
• Develop quizzes, questionnaires, and tests
• Access information on data and statistics regarding users’ participation, progress, and platform utilization
• Create students work groups, in order to promote cooperation and team work
• Utilize a plethora of communication tools; from direct messages and chat, to teleconferences, and forums
• Protect the uploaded materials, in case of accidental deletion or corruption.

Through the Open e-Class platform, teachers are now able to effectively organize and deliver digital courses, by utilizing existing educational material. At the same time students have the freedom to access the mentioned material, whenever they wish to.

Through the Open e-Class Platform, distant teaching and learning procedures are implemented on the adult educational process, something particularly useful during the covid era.

Open e-Class offers teachers the opportunity to form student groups, thus encouraging team collaboration between students. Navigation of systems, processing of information, as well as self-awareness are also skills put forward by students, especially when they have to make their way through the platform individually.
